Florida Board of Bar Examiners - Attorney Member Positions on the Board

Image of the board's Seal. The central figure on the Seal is a griffin, a universally accepted symbol for vigilance. The griffin is holding the Nordic symbol for fidelity, which comes from Nordic mythology. Beneath the griffin appears the Latin phrase “Clemens iustitiae custodia.” Custodia is the word used for keeping watch in order to protect, and Clementia is used technically for leniency in punishing offenses. Closely translated, this phrase means “Compassionate and vigilant protection of justice.” Expanded, this would mean the watchful protection (or preservation) of justice, a watchful or protective preservation which is compassionate or merciful. The Arabic numerals "1955" appear at the bottom of the seal, indicating the year of the creation of the Florida Board of Bar Examiners.

Florida Board of Bar Examiners Membership

On November 1, 2025, Cristina E. Groschel was elevated to office of Chair of the board, and Laura E. Pincus became Vice Chair. Additionally, the terms of attorney members Brian M. Beason and Randy A. Hummel and public member Cheri A. Boyle began on November 1.

February 2026 Filing Deadline

The timely filing deadline for the February 2026 General Bar Examination is November 15, 2025. Please follow the applicable checklists on this website to ensure that all filing requirements are met.

March 2026 MPRE Deadline

The Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE) registration deadline for the March 2026 MPRE is January 22, 2026. Please visit the NCBE's website at www.ncbex.org for information about applying to take that examination.

July 2028 Examination Announcement

The Florida Board of Bar Examiners has announced that it will administer the NextGen Bar Exam with Florida Law Component beginning with the July 2028 Florida Bar Exam.

Attorney Member Positions on the Board

Lawyer applicants are being sought to fill one vacancy on the Florida Board of Bar Examiners. A joint screening committee of Florida Bar Board of Governors members and Board of Bar Examiners members will recommend three nominees for one lawyer vacancy at its May 2021 meeting. The nominations will then be forwarded to the Supreme Court to fill one five-year term commencing November 1 and expiring on October 31, 2026.

Attorney members must have been an active member of The Florida Bar for at least five years, maintain active membership while serving on the board, and be deemed qualified by the court to assess whether applicants meet the essential eligibility requirements for admission under the Rules of the Supreme Court Relating to Admissions to the Bar. Appointment or election to the bench at any level of the court system will disqualify any applicant. Law professors or trustees are ineligible.

Board members of the Bar Examiners must be able to attend approximately 10 meetings a year in various Florida locations. Members should be willing and able to devote the equivalent of three to four days’ work a month, or up to 350 or more hours per year on board business, depending on committee assignments. Actual travel expenses connected with the meetings and examinations are reimbursed.

The vacancy will occur on November 1 with the expiration of the term of Jane A. Rose of Lutz.

A joint committee of Florida Bar Board of Governors and Florida Board of Bar Examiners members will review all applications and may request telephone or personal interviews.
